Horse Photographer | Storyteller | Observer of Wild Equus®
I am Malcolm, an equine and conservation photographer based in the heart of Dartmoor National Park. For more than two decades, I have devoted myself to capturing the quiet, untamed presence of Dartmoor’s ponies — not as posed subjects, but as part of the living, breathing landscape they help to shape.
My journey began in childhood, where time spent outdoors sparked a lifelong connection with nature and wildlife. When I moved to Devon over twenty years ago, I found not just inspiration but purpose: to observe, document, and share the story of Dartmoor’s native ponies and the landscapes they are so vital to.
Why Dartmoor?
Dartmoor is more than a backdrop — it is a place of resilience, biodiversity, and balance. The ponies that roam this ancient landscape are not decorative; they are conservation grazers, quietly restoring heather, creating habitats for ground-nesting birds, and supporting a rich web of wildlife. Through my photography, I aim to show not only their beauty, but their ecological purpose.
Wild Equus® — Advocacy Through Observation
Wild Equus® is the heart of my work: an ongoing project dedicated to raising awareness of wild and semi-wild equines and their crucial role in conservation grazing. Whether here on Dartmoor or in wild spaces across the world, these animals are part of nature’s solution — shaping habitats, restoring balance, and sustaining biodiversity.
As a photographer, writer, and patron of the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust, I use my images and stories to help shift perceptions from conflict to conservation. Through Wild Equus®, I aim to build a global conversation around horses and ponies in the wild — celebrating them not as relics of the past, but as active guardians of natural landscapes.
Observation, not Orchestration
My photography is guided by a simple philosophy: Observation, not Orchestration. I never intrude or interfere. I wait, I watch, and I quietly document moments as they unfold — honest, natural, and unposed. I believe the most powerful stories are those we are privileged to witness, not stage.

For those wishing to experience this connection first-hand, I offer small, immersive Dartmoor Horse Photography Workshops.
These are not ordinary workshops; they are opportunities to step into wild spaces, observe without disturbance, and learn the art of quiet storytelling through your lens. Whether you are new to photography or looking to deepen your craft, I will guide you through technique, composition, and — most importantly — patience and presence.
We will go off the beaten track, following ancient paths where ponies graze undisturbed, and where the landscape and light change by the hour. Together, we will capture images that honour the horse, the environment, and the timeless bond between them.
